Etiquette for dining out with a messy little one?

I have a 7 month old and now that she is eating more solid foods and pieces of food, she is becoming quite a mess to eat with. At home, it’s no big deal, but at a restaurant, I can’t quite figure out the right way to go about it. I hav ea rule of thumb…if there is no kids menu, children do not belong in this establishment so it’s not like I am dining at really fancy places. I just don’t want to be the couple the whole dining room talks about as we leave. SO, I tend to keep our area tidy and pick up the big chunks and at least get them on a plate. But, recently I have seen so many parents leave spots looking as though WW3 has just taken place right in their very seats. SO, as I was picking up food from the floor at lunch yesterday, the waitress stopped me and said she would just take care of it. I thought to myself, that was nice, but not necessary. I guess I just don’t know how far to go with the clean up process. What is to be expected and what is too far? Anyone have any experience as a waiter or waitress in this instance?
