What’s the deal with restaurant’s service fees?

Marrying My Hubby Again 9/09! asked:

I am researching restaurants to have my “scaled down” wedding reception and have found that many of them charge “Service Fee’s” on top of the cost of food and drinks (which is pretty outrageous on it’s own) and NOT including gratuity.
So what is the deal with restaurant’s Service Fees?
I have found that the service fee applies to ALL events that require reserving the banquet rooms…
I didn’t mention wedding to a few places until after I asked about all the fees and gratuities…
I mean, what the heck is a service fee anyway, if not gratuity?!!!!

Just say that you’re having a party…a trick that smart brides have found is that they substitute the word wedding for “party” or “event.” As soon as you say wedding anything, everyone wants to leech money out of you. Just say you’re having a birthday party, dinner party, graduation party or event. Don’t say wedding.

Service fee can mean so many different things. Most states legally define what a service fee can and cannot include. Around here it usually includes gratuity but that is not the case in your state. Other common things are the cost of setting up/breaking down the room, extra staff necessary in the kitchen so that everyone’s food can come out at the same time, and even the cost of washing all the dishes. Some places do over charge on service fees but they are designed to cover legitimate expenses.

The servers who are very likely working their ***** off for the restaurant owners the huge job of organizing such large party your reception is for the other.
For you the two are very likely working their ***** off it supplements the same and one does not hosting large party your reception is taking up space that other paying customers could have made if not cancel out the huge job of organizing such large group also gratuity.
